excess material resulting frorn swell of the total soil volurne excavated would
increase these depths somewhat.
Most existing vegetation would readily grow up through these minor soil coverings,
thus obviating the need for reclamation of such areas. Furthermore, because
excavated materials will be replaced in the trench more or less in the reverse order
in which they were removed, the "excess" are most likely to be somewhat reworked
topsoils and, as such, not "difficult to reclaim."
30. To quantify impacts to vegetation we need to know how they plan to clear the ROW.
How lazge of an area will be cleared to baze soil and how much of the 75-foot condor will still
have vegetation, albeit crushed vegetation? Will they make an effort to leave trees in place or will
they clear trees across the entire corridor? (This same type of information should be included for
the mining site.)
See our response to item 25, above. As indicated there, the desired construction
right-of--way width will be 125 feet. The only portion of that width that will
intentionally be cleared to bare ground will be the pipeline trench and the areas
immediately adjacent to it (about 10-12 feet). Substantial impact to vegetation will
also occur due to soil piling and equipment movement (up to about 20 feet on either
side of the trench for a total width of 46 feet, assuming a 6 foot trench). Where trees
and/or shrubs are present in the remaining portions of the pipeline right-of--way,
they will be cleared with a standard bulldozer. In general, it will be necessary to
remove all Yrees across the entire corridor to accommodate the construction
activities described in item 25. See Section 4 of "The Williams Companies Onshore
Pipeline Construction Specifications" (9 June 1997).
31. How many road crossings are there where the pipeline burial will be 4 feet deep?
There will be four road crossings that will require boring, located as follows:
• Piceance Creek; Section 28, TlS, R97W
• Collins Gulch; Section 16, T2S, R96W
• Piceance Creek: Section 32, T2S, R96W
• Parachute Creek; Section 17, T65, R96W.
The pipeline will be buried 4 feet deep at each road crossing, as required by DOT
specifications. The pipes will be placed in separate bores 10 feet apart under the
roads. The construction right-of-zvay will flare so~nezvhat to allow construction
activities at the road crossings.
18
