Page 2
chosen to determine the rate of degradation or agradation within
this reach over time. Some damage to the reference points occurred
due to wildlife in the area. The reference points were replaced as
near as possible to the original locations with pins that will
hopefully withstand the wildlife over time.
To evaluate the overall erosion condition of various reclaimed
areas, the Bureau of Land Management's Erosion Condition
Classification System described in Technical Note No. 346 was
utilized. This method considers both sheet, and rill and gully
erosion, and documents the overall erosion condition of a given
site. This method is described in detail in Permit No. C-80-001,
Appendix 4.3-B.
MONITORING INFORMATION
Moffat Area
Two areas were classified in the current reclaimed area at the
southern end of the Moffat Area. Block 1 is the eastern most area
on Exhibit 1, Sheet 1 of 2 in the 1992 report. This area is
bordered on the east by the upper haul road, on the south by the
toe of the out of pit spoil from the Moffat box cut, and on the
west by the middle Moffat haul road. Block 1 is live handled
topsoil that will not receive additional seeding as a test block
for live handling roto-cleared topsoil for reintroduction of native
plant species. Block 2 is also at the southern end of the Moffat
reserve and is bordered on the east by the middle Moffat haul road,
on the west by the lower Moffat haul road and on the south by the
toe of the out of pit Moffat spoils. This area is also shown in
the 1992 report on Exhibit 1, Sheet 1 of 2. This area is live
handled topsoil that has been tilled for seed application at the
rate prescribed in the Edna Mine permit. Both of these areas are
fairly new reclaim areas. As such, they had not yet been subjected
to the concentrated flows expected from snow melt in spring. Both
areas in this fall survey were in excellent condition but some
degradation is expected in the spring until vegetation is
established. These areas will be monitored closely in the spring
for introduction of flow features.
Block 1
Moffat Area, Block 1 was evaluated using the methods described in
BLM Technical Note No. 346. The erosion condition composite soil
surface factor score for this site is 10.5, which places it in the
Stable erosion class. The tabulated results for this survey are
shown in Table 1.
5/24/93 DLH
