~1
`r ' •
PERSIGO PIT
M-83-065
1.) As is referenced in your report, reclamation at the site began several years ago. In
1493 the eastern area, around the lake, site was reseeded. The western portion of the site
received an additional amount of overburden soil and topsoil to raise the elevation to
correspond with the adjacent areas. This activity occurred in 1996. It had not been
reseeded until this fall. According to your direction, final reclamation measures have
been initiated at this site. The amended seed mix is being applied during the last week of
November. There is a chance that completion of this task will run into the first week of
December. According to weather forecasts, the weather patterns will remain agreeable
for this activity. The specified seed mix, as amended in 1994, is being used.
We expect that the presence of large amounts of Russian knapweed, particularly on the
east and north shorelines, will influence the success of the emerging vegetation next
spring. We will evaluate the knapweed that is present and treat according to the volume
that has survived this fall's spraying program. If the surviving mass is large enough, we
will apply another treatment of spray. If not so large, it will be treated with cutting and
burning. If another application of spray is required, the emerging grasses will probably
be negatively affected. This being the case, another seeding effort will be made next fall,
and thus until adequate revegetation has been accomplished.
2.) With regard to the noxious weed problem that was identified at the site, a weed
eradication effort was performed this past September. The target of this program was the
large amounts of Russian knapweed that has been established at the site. The spraying
program was done according to the recommendations of Jude Sirota, Mesa County Weed
and Pest Inspector. The spray was applied by a licensed, commercial spraying company.
We are hopeful that this first application will be effective in the eradication of the weed.
We are expecting, though, to have to do some follow-up treatments to accomplish an
acceptable level of elimination. We believe that some cutting and/or burning of the
survivors will significantly affect the rootstock, hopefully to the point of its demise. We
do commit to continuous diligence in the control of this plant.
Page 2
