Photograph #2
~drology
J
The hydrology of bedrock ground water resources is directly related to the Purgatoire River.
The Purgatoire is a perennial stream located within a significant alluvial valley. The
Purgatoire alluvium is about 1260 feet in width south of the shaft location and approximately
2030 feet m thickness, with at least two terrace levels discernible in the valley Ground
water is found in the alluvium as evidenced by the numerous alluvial wells located in the
valley, especially to the west where alluvial water is the sole source of water for residents.
Ground water elevations in the vent shaft pilot hole and the windmill appear directly related to
the elevation of the river immediately south of the vent shaft, as evidenced in the cross
section. At greater depths, ground water occurs in coal seams due to the increased
secondary permeability of those seams. Water level in the mine is currently some 400 feet
below the elevation of the river.
