~`

Burro Mines-
Burro Mines (SSM2725)- The steel and wood constructed lower
ore bin associated with the Burro Mine is located at the
intersection of the access road to the Burro Mine #7. Site is
across road from the Dolores River and easily viewed from the Slick
Rock road. The ore bin and catwalk are in good condition and would
be a contributing aspect of Slick Rock area mine structures.
Recommendations: Site #5SM2725 is recommended for protection
as a contributing aspect of the Slick Rock group of mine
structures.
Hawkeye Mine-
Located just north of Slick Rock, the Hawkeye (5SM2724) is a
medium sized mine site representative of uranium mining operations
sites of the 1950's and 1960's. The Hawkeye contains one steel ore
bin, wood constructed catwalk, an adit and loadout site, The site's
structures are in relatively stable condition with some
deterioration of the wood retaining wall in the loadout area.
Recommendations: The Hawkeye Mine is considered for historic
preservation as a contributing component of the Slick Rock area
mine group. Its close access from the paved road would make it a
valuable resource for the public on a tour of the Slick Rock area.
Ellison Mine-
The Ellison Mine (5SM2723) is located less than a mile from
the Hawkeye mine on a small bench above the main Slick Rock access
road. The only remaining structure on the site is the wood
constructed ore bin/loadout which is only accessible by a badly
eroded trail up from the Slick Rock road.
The wood constructed ore bin and chute at the Ellison mine is
distinguished from any of the other sites in the Slick Rock area.
The ore bin is in very good condition with little deterioration of
the wood. The mine site was probably operated during the 1940's and
1950's, and judging from the small size of the improved terrace
that it sits on, the only component of the original site may have
been the ore bin, chute, and an adit above the site.
Recommendations: The Ellison is highly recommended for
preservation and interpretive signing. The site is representative
of older operations in the Uravan Mineral Belt and is in fairly
good condition structurally. The site, although impossible to
access by vehicle, would be a valuable addition to an area tour. A
foot trail could be built up the eroded access road that leads up
to the site.
The three sites inventoried in the Big Gypsum Valley are
located on the Western slope of the valley and are contributing
aspects of a group dominated by large, modern operations. Two of
those sites, the Carnation (SSM2727) and the West Sunday mines
(5SM2728}, are typical of the area. The third site, component two
of the Carnation Mine, appears to be the smallest and oldest
10
