and remains fairly stable. Although not unique it is an important
part of the structures remaining. The wooden ore chute is
indicative of an older mine operation.
Recommendations: The site is recommended for preservation and
signing and though somewhat difficult to access by 2-wheel drive
(high clearance and 4-wheel drive recommended, especially during
wet conditions) both these features should be considered for future
interpretation of the Bull Canyon area mines.
Sweat Lodge Associated with Fawn Springs #6 mine site-
At the Fawn Springs #6 mine site only one feature was
recorded. The sweat lodge (5MN4492) at this site is in excellent
condition and has not been disturbed since usage. Last use of the
sweat lodge is difficult to determine. Judging from the condition
of the timber and charcoal deposition outside the entrance, the
site was probably used during the last period of mining in the area
in the late 1970's and early 1980's. There is a substantial pile of
oxidized rocks near the entrance and remains of rock pit inside.
Little remains at the mine complex and time did not allow for
further recordation.
Recommendations: Site # 5MN4492 is recommended for.
preservation and potentially interpretive signing. Although it is
impossible to determine, the sweat lodge was probably used by
Indian miners at area sites. According to local informants, these
ceremonial sweat lodges were common in the Uravan Mineral Belt
because of the substantial number of Indians who were recruited to
work area mines. Site is somewhat hidden but could be reached by
two-wheel drive vehicle.
3. Slick Rock/Gypsum Valley
(ssRA)
Seven sites were recorded in the Slick Rock and Gypsum Valley
area. Five are located in the vicinity of Slick Rock and three on
the western slope of the Sig Gypsum Valley.
The Slick Rock sites; the Ellison (5SM2723), the Hawkeye
(5SM2724), the lower ore bin of the Burro Mines (55M2725) and the
Burrow Mine #7 (5SM2726) site have been determined to have
characteristics worthy of consideration for historic preservation.
Burro Mine #7-
The Burro Mine #7 (5SM2726) was the largest complete site
inventoried in the area. It includes a steel head frame, three ore
bins, a hoist house and a water pipeline for the mining operation.
Recommendations: This site is largely undisturbed by
reclamation work and is highly recommended for preservation based
upon the completeness of the site, its good condition and the
opportunity for future historic interpretation. This site could
easily be reached by 2-wheel drive vehicle if permission was
granted by Umetco Minerals for public usage of the chained mine
access road.
9
