The BLM Wildlife Biologist, 4. Ed Hallowed, of the
Meeker, Colorado office requ+§ted in May of 1989 that we
conduct a search of prairie dog towns to the south of the
Red Rocks area adjacent to Refuse Sub Area *1 . A prairie
dog town consisting of 195 holes were inspected by the survey
crew with a total of 25 hoIA active ( 12 .8 %) . A total of 2 . 5
team hours (5 . 0 man hours) were spent mapping and surveying
this colony. (See attached Map 126) .
No ferret nor ferret sign was observed during this
search effort . Animal species that were seen during
the nocturnal searches included Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo
jamaicensis ) , Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) , Pronghorn
• Antelope (Antilocapra americana) , Badger (Taxidea taxus ) ,
and Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) , Black-tailed
Jackrabbit (Lepus townsendii ) and the Desert Cottontail
Rabbit (Sylvilagus auduboni ) .
Prairie dog sign found during 1989 morning search
efforts showed a slight decline over the 1988 Western Fuels
study with 29 . 2% of the burrows and mounds active within
the propose Refuse Area #4 verses 47 .4% in 1988 and only 3 %
in 1986 . These colonies seem to be undergoing a slight
decline to due predation and hunting by sheep herders and
others in the area .
•
