S . 40 ( located 20-25 miles northwest of the
Deserado Mine permit area) .
Sighting reports for the area peaked in 1983 at seven.
with two reported in 1985 and two through August of 1986
(CDOW March 1986 ; personal communication. Bob Leachman,
USFWS, Grand Junction , September 1986) . All of these
sightings are of a probable nature and none have occurred
• on or closer than 10-15 miles from the Deserado Mine .
As the result of the high number of sightings in the
area, the CDOW, in 1985 , conducted intensive ferret
surveys of high density prairie dog towns northwest of the
Deserado Mine in the area bounded by U. S . 40 on the north and
on the south and west by State Highway 64 . Additionally , a
cooperative team composed of CDOW, BLM, USFWS, and
National Park Service personnel searched the area around
Dinosaur National Monument in 1983-84 (CDOW March 1986) .
Both survey efforts failed to locate a ferret or
positively diagnostic ferret sign . Other major ferret
surveys in the region , in particular an 18, 000 acre survey
conducted in 1985 and 1986 by Associates, Inc . under contract
• to Chevron USA in the Rangely Oil Field ( 10 miles northwest
