SAN ISIDRO EL LABRADOR: THE
PATRON SAINT OF CES
In keeping with the spirit of stewardship of our
land and water, CES has decided that San Isidro will
be our patron Saint. San Isidro lived in 12th cernury
Madrid, Spain earning his living as a sharecropper.
He was considered an excellent farmer and well
digger or ocero. Today four of San Isidro's wells
corninue to function in Madrid. When the Spanish
came to the New World they brought San Isidro as
a patron Saint of farmers, a spiritual partner to help
keep the land productive, We feel that San Isidro will
also guide us in the task of making sure our natural
resources will be protected and kept productive for
many generations. May the spiritual strength of San
Isidro guide our work.
BEWARE THE CULEBRA IS BEING
CONTAMINATED
CES is not only concerned with BMG but also
other local environmental issues. CES has recently
become aware that the Costilla County Sewage
Treatment Lagoon near San Pablo has not met
Cobrado Health Department standards for the past
four years. In fact, the County is under a Cease and
Desist Order because the facility must be upgraded
through construction, piping modification, flow
metering, and sludge removal, according to Jenny
Torrez of the State Hearth Department. Torrez stated
the major concern is that the present plant is
releasing pathogens (fecal col'rform) into Culebra
Creek. If water is accidently swallowed these
pathogens can cause hearth problems. Torrez
stated that the County hired Summit Engineering of
Alamosa to do a study on how to upgrade the
facility.
In March, 1990, the County Commissioners asked
for an impact assistance grant for $41,000. The
Health Department was unaware 'rf they had gotten
the grant or not. If the County gets the money
needed to upgrade the lagoon officials will be put
under a strict construction schedule. If no money
was granted the County •at some point may face the
threat of civil penalty' by the Health Department
according to Torrez. If you are concerned please
write or call the Commissioners or attend their next
public meeting and voice your opinion.
OUR DUMP IS BEING DUMPED ON
The San Luis Dump is being used by
subcontractors of BMG. CES nas become aware of
large amounts of black plastic (used in construction
of tailings facilRies) being thrown and burned at the
dump. Subcontractors have been seen dumping
black plastic wastes and considerable amounts of
dark black smoke have been seen coming from the
dump during burning periods. 3urning of such large
amounts of plastic can produce sulfur dioxide,
nitrogen oxides, and hydrogen chloride. These
gases are as bad as they sound and can cause
respiratory diseases. When burned 30 percent of
the plastic becomes ash. This ash produces
concentrated and toxic heave metals and dioxin
which can pollute ground water. If you are
concerned about BMG and it's subcornractors using
a public dump for their waste please contact the
Commissioners orwrite the State Health Department,
Landfill Division. 4210 East 11th Ave. Denver 80220.
POESIA DEL PUEBLO
Freedom
Follow the glide of just any bird
Or look higher, and follow a clod.
Notice the sound of a running book
...and, Oh pearl There's a melody
somewhere.
Why does the wind
motion like some thing
Of a thousand, thousand wings.
It's as though I too
Have some p/ace to go.
Some place no one else can lead me.
Do I dare, the dare, o! this little bush
And, oh where, oh where, will it
lead me?
There's such /reedom here
In this high retreat
Every creature clearly will tell you.
Take the stately pine
iu!! 01 grace and line
Militarily guarding with honor,
This whole mountain site, with the Kingdom rights
OI SANGRE DE CRISTO the donor.
-Sister Teresa Jaramillo
