i ~ - I
iii riiriiiuriiiii
STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman 51., Room ? I S
Denver, Colorado A0203
Phone: 130}1 A66-3567
FA%: 1103)A3?-A106
DATE: June 10, 1996
TO: Joe Dudash
FROM: Larry Routten/~L
RE: HG Vegetation Sampling
~I~~~
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
RESOURCES
Roy Romer
Governur
lames S Lochhead
Eaecwrve Director
Michael A. Long
Division Director
I reviewed the vegetation sampling outline for the HG Mine submitted by TerraMatrix.
My review was done with the intent of ensuring that the field studies are done in such a
manner that the goals of the Division's bond release guidelines are met. In genera,
TerraMatrix.s proposed study meets those goals. However, the proposal is lacking in some
details. The guideline should be consulted in conjunction with my comments, if there are
any questions.
I was not able to determine if topsoil replacement practices (specifically, replacement
thickness) was the same over the entire site. If not, TerraMatrix should consider treating
areas with different topsoil replacement thicknesses as separate sampling areas. I also did
not find any information specifying which seed mix or mixes were used. I presume the seed
mix was the same or very similar over the entire site. It would be helpful to locate these
two pieces of information prior to field studies. Iran out of time to search because I need
to be out of the office next week.
The following comments and questions are items TerraMatrix might want to consider and/or
discuss with the Division prior to beginning their field work.
1. TerraMatrix's proposal to sample the entire mine site is probably adequate; however,
they did not give any details about how they intend to stratify their samples in the
areas reclaimed during nine different years. I would suggest the proportional
allocation or acreage-weighted sampling methods discussed in the bond release
guideline.
2. TerraMatrix might consider gathering some representative data from small,
noncontiguous areas such as topsoil pile C and the explosives storage area, even if
randomly placed transects do not fall in those areas. They would at least have some
documentation of the success of reclamation in those areas. If data is not collected,
a thorough discussion of qualitative observations should be included in the study, at
a minimum.
~,u../,~.. - /ca/NGr
