REPORT ON SITE CONDITIONS
WEST SUNDAY MINE, PERMIT M-1981-021
March 2003
The West Sunday Mine is one of five permitted mines held by the Operator in the Big
Gypsum Valley of San Miguel County, Colorado (see Figure 1, GENERAL LOCATION MAP,
1' = 300').
Site Features.
The West Sunday Mine Permit includes the mine portal, mine yard, support buildings,
electric power service, topsoil stockpile, waste dump, and related access road. There are three
vent shafts and related power facilities and access roads associated with this Permit. Figure 2,
WEST SUNDAY MINE, PERMIT M-1981-021, ROADS AND VENT HOLES, 1" = 200',
shows the location of the West Sunday Mine and related remote installations. Figure 3, WEST
SUNDAY MINE, PERMIT M-1981-021, 1" = 100', shows the details of the West Sunday Mine
surface installation.
Roads and Vent Holes.
Figure 2 shows the location of the three vent holes, and associated power facilities and
access roads, included under the West Sunday Mine Permit. Figure 2 also shows the location of
the SJ-1 vent shaft and the nearby compressor station. The individual sites are described
hereunder.
WS-1 Vent -This vent shaft location is the northernmost of the three vent holes included
under the Permit. The access into the site is steep, but generally is in passable condition. The
access road is a branch off the existing BLM main road along the ridgeline. The WS-1 location
is stable and sparsely vegetated. The vent shaft is grated and secure.
Immediately down slope from the WS-1 vent is a large transformer station. The
transformer installation is fenced and secure. The power line into this installation belongs to San
Miguel Power Company; some of the transformers at this installation belong to the Operator and
some belong to the utility. The utility has been contacted to coordinate with the Operator in
confirming ownership of all electrical facilities in the area.
The access road to WS-1 and the transformer installation continues southerly past the
installations and ties into an E-W road that follows along the hillside. The access road down the
slope is steep and in poor condition.
WS-2 Vent -The WS-2 vent shaft is located immediately adjacent to the access road that
branches off the existing maintained BLM road a short distance to the east of the WS-2 site.
This access road passes through the WS-2 site and extends to the west to a compressor
installation and the WS-3 vent site. The WS-2 site is stable and secure with limited natural
revegetation taking place. There is no caving around the shaft collar, and the shaft is grated and
secure. Some minor erosion from the cutbank above the site is washing material onto the
location. Three transformers are mounted on a pole; these units belong to the local utility.
