•
be translated into a workable program and communicated to the mine operator.
~ We have instructed the operators to save the dark colored surface horizons. The
operator was shown the color difference between the dark surface horizons (mollic
epipedon) and the subsoils. That color difference is approximately dark grayish
brown (lOYR 4/2) dry and very dark brown (lOYR 2/2) moist for surface horizons and
~ yellowish brown (lOYR 5/4) dry and dark yellowish brown (lOYR 3/4) moist for sub-
soils. He has been instructed that the thickness of this surface horizon for the
most part is between 20 and 40 inches.
~ In addition, we have posted topsoil stripping depth signs as a guide for the oper-
ators. Depth of topsoil to be stripped from an area are posted as 0, 20, 40
inches. Signs have been placed just beyond the area to be stripped along the haul
road.
•
The operator will strip soils using a back hoe to reach above the road cut and get
to the soils. On gentler slopes (less than 2:1) a dozer will pioneer a road on the
hillslope above the existing road. The appropriate depth of topsoil will be pushed
~ onto the existing road, .picked up by scrapers, and taken to road fills to be
redressed. Soils will not be saved where slopes are steeper than 2:1 and where the
cut bank is too high to get above with the back hoe. We estimate that this
represents about 10 percent of the area to be disturbed.
•
Topsoil stripping depths of zero (0) inches have been posted in areas of Rockland
(Figure 1). We have also posted depths of zero (D) where Lithic Cryoborolls are
mapped. Attempts to save these soils would lower the quality of topsoil being
~ saved. Depths of 20 inches have been posted in areas of map unit 2 of Typic Cryo-
borolls, fine-loamy, where the mollic epipedon is about 20 inches thick. The
remainder of the area has been posted as 40 inches.
•
5.6 FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS
The soils recommended for stripping and redressing along the road have generally
~ good levels of macro- and micro-nutrients with the exception of nitrogen.
