Two distinct types of regraded spoil exis
first is a mixed spoil matrix that consists predominantly of light
stone. The second is mixed spoil that is predominantly dark gray
or "wet" spots are also present in the second type.
% of Mix
6.5
3.2
6.5
12.9
12.9
6.5
3.2
3.2
3.2
3.2
3.2
3.2
3.2
3.2
3.2
6.5
6.5
6.5
3.2
with 35 acres affected
t within this area. The
yellowish brown sarid-
to black shale. "Slick"
Soil samples were collected with a spade from both spoil types on September 28, 1982
and June 30, 1983. Most samples are a composit of ten subsamples and were collected
from the upper four inches of spoil. Samples were placed and sealed in 4-mil polyeth-
ylene bags, boxed, and shipped to Peabody Coal Company Central Laboratory in
Freeburg, Illinois for analysis. The samples were dried at 95°F in a forced air oven and
subsequently crushed to pass o 10, 20, or 60 mesh sieve for individual analysis. The
initial analyses were completed on October 5, 1982 while the second set of comprehen-
sive analyses were completed on July 20, 1983.
Investigations of established vegetation consisted of ocular analysis and plant collections
of species growing on or around the soil sampling sites as well as over-all establishment r•
for the entire reclaimed area. Particular attention was paid to species establishment, /
health and vigor of plants, environmental conditions affecting establishment and growth, '
and plant densities. Plants collected on site have been turned over to the Colorado
School of Mines Research Institute for ilssue analysts.
