I,i i~7(~'fui Iic SC!!r pc <br />c... <br />In your inspection report of June 23, 1983 for our Seneca II Mine, you noted a problem <br />with the reclamation success in the "old Wolf Creek" area. Section IV of the report <br />,states: <br />Submit an evaluation of the old Wolf Creek area discussing the <br />characteristics of The growth material, what is causing The revegetation <br />problem and a plan and schedule for additional revegetation activities by <br />August I, 1983. <br />Given the magnitude of the problem area, as per our discussions since fhe inspection, the <br />following will not address any additional reclamation or revegetation activities at this <br />time. <br />A meeting has been scheduled for August 16, 1983 between Peabody Coal Company and <br />CMLR to further discuss the problem and hopefully to arrive at possible solutions. The <br />discussion which follows pertains only to steps taken Thus far to identify the problem. <br />Background <br />The old Wolf Creek area was mined utilizing the conventional area strip mining method <br />as defined in the regulations. Disturbance in this area took place largely between August <br />1975 and August 1976. <br />Reclamation activities in this area began with backfilling and grading operations starting <br />in the winter of 1980 and terminating in the summer of 1981. Seeding of the area was <br />conducted in fall 1981. The area was drill seeded with a Rangeland type drill at a rate of <br />15.5 lbs. of pure live seed (P.L.S.) per acre. The area was not mulched.
