Mr. Stuart A. Sanderson
April 4, 1995 - 1995 Awards
Page 2
Operations at Honeywoad Caal Company's Hamilton Mine hegan in the spring of 1992. Permitted for 1147 acres,
the Hamilton Mine ceased operations a year later, after disturbing 111 acres and producing 430,000 tons of coal.
Following the initiation of reclamation activities in the summer of 1993, the Hamilton Mine achieved a full Phase
I Bond Release in the fall of 1994.
The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company employs a 'Rotaclear" machine in their topsoil stripping operations
at the Edna Mine. Using a 'Ratodear' machine allows Pittsburg and Midway to incorporate vegetation into their
stripped topsail, and replace topsoil in a "live-handled" manner without having to reseed. This reclamation practice
has resulted in rapid revegetation success and a reduction in topsoil erosion. Brome, bluegrass and 6- to 10-inch
tall stands of snawherry, serviceberry, chokecherry, Wood's rose and sagebrush have been well re-established.
In the category of Reclaimed Mine, the award goes to Quinn Coal Company for Outstanding Overall Reclamation
achieved at the Tomahawk Mine near Cedaredge, Colorado. In addition to successfully achieving full Phase I and
Phase II Bond Releases, Quinn Coal Company took extra measures during the construction of a permanent diversion
channel and the removal of its sediment ponds to hlend the reclaimed disturbances into the surrounding undisturbed
topography. Quinn Coal Company has also successfully established a diverse woody plarrt community comprised of
juniper, sumac, plum, chokecherry, antelope bitterbrush and faurwing saltbush.
The Division appreciates the assistance and cooperation of the Colorado Mining Association in the preparation of
the 1995 Awards Program. Please do not hesitate to contact us, if you have any further questions.
Sincerely,
~~~4}..~ ~CC~,titiiti(~~.
Daniel I.
