During the last year, Energy Fuels
Mining Company took extra measures to backfill and grade several pre-law portal face-ups for the safety and
protection of the public. Energy Fuels also took extra measures to permanently protect a reclaimed coal refuse pile
by installing a "Reno Mattress" erosion protection system in the upland diversion ditch above the refuse pile. This
"Reno Mattress" protection system is designed to protect the diversion channel from runoff erosion to a level three
times above that required by the Division.
In the category of Large Active Underground Mine, the award goes to Mountain Coal Company for their Outstanding
Minimization of Environmental Impact at their West Elk Mine near Somerset, Colorado. Water-saturated soils
contrihute significantly to slope instability on the valley of the North Fark of the Gunnison River. Mountain Coal
Company has taken extra measures to reduce soil saturation and improve minesite slope stability by "shot-creteing"
its disturbed area water collection ditches and by lining its three sedimentation ponds with a bentanite geotextile.
In the category of Large Active Surface Mine, we had a tie. The award will be shared between Honeywood Coal
Company far Outstanding Environmental Compliance and Outstanding Contemporaneous Reclamation at their Hamilton
Mine near Naturita, Colorado, and Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company for Outstanding Innovation in
Reclamation Practices at their Edna Mine near Oak Creek, Colorado.
