1~ '
-z-
July 1, 1982
3. As outlined in our 4/29 letter to Mr. Biscoff,.we view the beitpress as a
key element in the long term solution to slurry underflow handling at the mine.
The machinery has been delivered and is presently being installed in the prep
plant. Barring unforseen circumstances, we expect the belt press to be operational
between July 15 and July 31. Following initial start up, there will be a 30-60
day break in period in which Dorchester will be experimenting with various polymer
mixtures and prep plant circuit options to determine the most efficient mode of
operation. We do however expect that we will be in a position to have Sediment
Pond #1 completely cleaned out by October 31, 1982. After that time, the use
of pond #1 as a slurry dewatering facility will be limited to upset conditions
and/or use on a small scale under a plan which shows sufficient excess capacity
in the pond to accommodate such use in addition to the normal design requirements
for a sediment pond.
We hope that the above narrative will meet your regulatory needs. On the basis
of this letter along with our discussions on June 22, we will expect that Nov 82-27
will be vacated in its entirety. Dorchester will be working diligently to get all
issues surrounding the permit application resolved in a timely manner. Should you
have any questions or require additional information regarding this letter or any
other circumstances at the Dorchester #1 operation, please don't hesitate to call.
We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to work with you and your staff towards
a mutually acceptable resolution of all issues at our mines. Thank You.
S~incerely, /
-~«~ ~ 2
_ =-` ~ '%/
Dean R.-Ma s.ey- ~
Director ~y~' onmental Affairs
l/ \
DRM:ed
