Dept. of Natural Resources
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
1313 Sherman St. #423
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Dorchester #1 Sediment Pond/Refuse Dump Nov 82-27
Dear Fred:
On June 22, 1982, we met to discuss the present circumstances of the sediment
pond and refuse dump at the Dorchester #1 Mine, along with the measures Dorchester
is implementing to improve upon the current situation. During the course of that
meeting it was suggested that I submit a letter which specifically described the
improvements Dorchester is making on site and sets forth a definitive schedule for
their implementation. Effective communication and cooperation with CMLR continues
to be a conerstone of Dorchester's planning and operating policy. In this spirit,
I am setting forth the following schedule which will serve to complement my letter
to Mr. Biscoff of April 29.
1. Dorchester has had a draft refuse dump reconstruction plan prepared by Rocky
Mountain Geotechnical (RMG). This plan sets forth methodologies and stability
analyses to support a reconstruction program at the refuse dump which will alleviate
the present situation and optimize future storage capacity of the refuse area. Mine
personnel have been following the basic tenets of the plan in their activities at
the dump since May. The RMG plan is being finalized and will be submitted for CMLR
review by July 15, 1982.
2. It is difficult to predict the timeframe for complete reconstruction of the
problem areas in the dump for two reasons. While we are satisified with the RMG
plan, it must undergo a CMLR review with an uncertain timeframe. In addition,
reconstruction is dependent upon the rate of production of coarse reject material
which varies with mining conditions. We do feel, however, that the existing sit-
uation regarding the slurry pit on the dump can be fully resolved in a manner
consistent with the RMG plan (assuming approval by CMLR) within 3 to 6 months of
CMLR approval.
A Subsidiary of Dorchester Gas Corporation
