<br />Quantitative Sampling - General: <br />Sample locations were selected randomly from within the <br />reference areas and the areas to be disturbed. Sample starting <br />points were located on a modified random-stratified design. For <br />the most extensive community, sagebrush rangeland, sample points <br />were selected from a 200 x 200 foot grid. Sample locations were <br />located in the field through the use of compass and pacing. Cover <br />transect and woody plant quadrat directions were randomly selected <br />from 8 possible directions: N, NW, W, SW, S, SE, E, and NE. The <br />other two communities and the two reference areas were much <br />smaller. Therefore, to locate 50 potential sample points, a 100 by <br />100 foot grid was established. Sample points were then randomly <br />selected. At times, all possible sample points were used. Thus <br />• sampling took on a strict stratified random sampling look where all <br />sample points were located at fixed intervals from each other. For <br />each of the smaller communities and reference areas, <br />transect/quadrat directions were selected randomly to be 10 to 20 <br />degrees off north, south, east or west to avoid the 165 foot tape <br />(50 meter transect) from overlapping between points (situated <br />north, south, east and west of each other). Generally, <br />transect/quadrat directions, once selected, were held consistent <br />for an entire area to avoid overlap. The approximate location of <br />sample points is marked on the enclosed map. Cover and woody plant <br />density transects originated from marked sample locations. The <br />location of production plots is described below. Production plot <br />numbers do not correspond directly to sample point numbers <br />indicated on the enclosed map. <br />• - 3 - <br />
