Mr. David Berry
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
December 19, 1997
Page 9
40. When and why did the slump occur that exposed the outflow from the Edwards portal?
What aze the weathered concrete and steel materials associated with?
Bear -The slump occurred that exposed the mine outflow on November 17, 1997. The
cause of the slump was virtually complete saturation. The weathered concrete and steel
materials are associated with the tipple and or portal of the Clark and Edwards mines.
41. Provide location, elevation and data from any slope stability movements in the vicinity of
the Bear Mine facility.
Bear -See data compiled by UTE Engineering and Surveying Company (File #10).
42. Please provide copies of any aerial photographs or photogrametric maps taken and/or
constructed in the last 4 years.
Bear - No aerial photographs or photgrametric maps have been taken or constructed in the
last four years.
43. When was the reclamation of the coal reclaim conveyor and ventilation tunnel staged and
completed? Where did the material come from to backfill the reclaim and ventilation
tunnels? ow was this water handled when reclaiming the reclaim tunnel and vent? How
were these inflows sealed at reclamation?
Bear -The reclaim and ventilation tunnel was reclaimed during October 1997. Water was
pumped to the pond to facilitate reclamation. The reclaim and ventilation tunnels are
temporarily backfilled with gob. The flow did not have to be sealed. The flow is
apparently absorbed by the alluvium.
44. When was water first observed in the reclaim and vent tunnels? How has this water been
handled? Please provide historic flows, field parameters and chemistry.
Bear -There has been some water in the reclaim tunnel since it was constructed in 1981
or 1982. The water was typically a problem during high river flow. For field parameters
see number 38 above. During 1997, water in the reclaim tunnel was abnormal. Typically
the reclaim tunnel was dry during July and August. However, during 1997 there was
water in the tunnel all year.
45. Please provide an accurate (surveyed) map of all of the Beaz No. 3 Mine portals, main
entries, and outby facilities (stack tube, reclaim tunnel, reclaim vent, etc,), along with the
Edwards portals, main entries and outby facilities including elevations and coordinates.
