Mfr. David Berry
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
December 19, 1997
Page 8
Beaz -See B-Seam Progress Map (File #7). MCC has Bear's AHRs which provide
encountered water data. Mine water was stored in a small sump located east of and at the
bottom of the ramps to the B-Seam.
34. Provide location and areas where C-Seam workings collapsed into the B-Seam workings.
Beaz -Beaz believes there was a collapse between the seams in forth east one south
section at the southern end of the mine. There may have also been a collapse between the
seams on the belt entry about 440-feet inby the portal.
35. Provide location and chazacter of all seals placed in B- and C-Seam workings.
Bear -See B-Seam Progress Map (File #7). Bear used; 1) wood seals; 2) solid block
seals and; 3) Tek-Foam seals.
36. Provide surveyed location of Beaz C-Seam portal and Edwards B-Seam portal.
Bear -See B-Seam Progress Map (File #7).
37. Provide location and elevation of the base of the reclaim structure and the sump under the
surge or reclaim coal pile.
Beaz -See Draw-Of'f Tunnel, UTE Engineering and Surveying Company (File #9).
38. Describe timing, quantity and chemical composition of water pumped from the sump
under the reclaim tunnel.
Beaz -Water was pumped from the reclaim tunnel as needed. Records of pumping are
sporadic. Three field measurements taken in 1995 show an average pH of 7.9, average
conductivity of 2683 umhos/cm and an average temperature of 16° C.
39. When and where was the current slide movement first noticed? How has the slide
changed over time? Do you have notes or photographs that can be shared with us?
Bear - The slide started in June 1997 with activity on the west side where rocks were
raveling into the river. The slide progressed from west to east. Slide activity increased in
October with cracks noted west of the C-Seam portals. On November 14th and 15th the
slide activity increased dramatically. On November 17th water emerged from the eastern
slide scarp. Bear does no have any photographs or notes that would be of any use to
MCC.
