9
'
road was widened and surfaced. This should limit future disturbance of
the road fill. It was then hydromulched and reseeded in February, 1975.
'
Mr. Harry Swift of Western Evergreens Nurser y has been retained to add
native sh rubs to the slopes. ,
' 2, Haul Road from Scalehouse into Quarry
Recommend ations
'
(aj Backslope road cuts where possible. It was recognized that
little backsloping was possible in this stretch of road.
' (h) Hydromulch the fill slopes and any successful back slopes
with about 15 pounds per acre of a mixture of four kinds of
' grass seed.
Actions
' No backsloping was practical. The fill slopes here have not been re-
disturbed. Most of them are now quite well stabilized and vegetated by
residual natural vegetation, new natural seeding and hand seeding without
' hydromulching. The remaining unvegetated patches were hydromulched in
February, 1975.
' The negative visual impact of a deep section of road cut remains here,
but little can be done to change it. The negative visual impact of the
fill slopes is greatly improved.
' 3. Service Road to Top of Quarry
Recommendations
(a) Provide drainage for the road in a way that will avoid concen-
trating runoff. Two suggestions were offered.
' (b) Backslope the cuts to a stable 2 to 1 or 1 1/2 to 1 slope.
(c) Seed with a mixture of seeds of three kinds of grasses and
' three kinds of shrubs with farm equipment or by hand.
(d) Hand plant acorns of Gambels oak in natural-appearing groups
on the fills.
Actions
' The cut slopes have not been backsloped as recommended.
For safety in wet weather the Company felt it could not outslope this
road, or "roll" the surface outward periodically, as recommended. Use
' during wet weather led to subsequent regrading that left a high berm
on the outside of the road. As this berm now conceals much of the cut
' bank from view from the highways below, our recommendations were changed
in 1974 to retain the present road form
.
1
