1
APP~NDIK 7
' THE STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF COLORADO
Slate Archaeologist, 5A Ketchum Bldg., University of Colorado, Boulder 80302

10 March 1975
Mr. G Lloyd Hayes
105 Palmer Drive
Fort Collins, Colorado 80521
Dear Mr. Hayes:
Nice [o hear from you again. Sorry for [he delay in this reply. I
t was on leave for two months and I did not get this written as quickly
as hoped.
' Enclosed is the information you requested by phone and your letter of
February 28, 1975 on archaeological resources known to fall within the
holdings of the Cooley Gravel Companies.' This involves TSS,R70W, Sections
t 10,11,15 and a small area of 2. A file search was done on the areas
outlined in green and blue on the map you submitted.
The file search turned up three possibilities. I say possibilities
' because the locational data is somewhat vague. Perhaps a more
detailed map could make it easier. Some of these older reports tend
' to be vague. It does, at the least, indicate regular occurrance of
prehistoric materials in the area.
Because it is pertinent to your statement on archaeological resources, it
' must be added that our files are incomplete. The Office of the State
Archaeologist is building a master file on Colorado site information.
It is being expanded to hopefully include site data from all agencies
and institutions dealing with prehistoric Colorado materials, but this
I ' is far from being accomplished. For the above file search the pertinent
University of Denver site records were searched. The enclosed records
come from those files. At this time our records are not comprehensive
' and this information does not even represent a full literature search
on the area of your concern.
Another important point is that this file holds records only of reported
' sites, sites referred to this office and previously to the University of
Colorado Museum. Most areas of the state have not been systematically
surveyed for prehistoric materials. The foothills zone, especially in
' the Morrison area, has consistently yielded interesting materials and
several excavations have been conducted in the general area. I do not
know of any systematic survey which has included the Cooley Gravel areas.
' A few reported sites does not necessarily mean that there is only a little
archaeological material in an area, only tha[ there has been little report-
ing of such items. For this reason, the information in the files is a
start, but it is basically an inadequate assesment of such resources.
' Any really significant evaluation of archaeological resources has to be
