Execudue Summary
Health and Safety. The project could lead to increased risk of wildfire; employees would
receive training, and all wildfires endangering life or property would be suppressed. Workplace
injuries would be similar to those experienced in the heavy construction and oil and gas
industries and would be limited to American Soda employees and contractors. Methane gas is
not expected to occur at substantial levels, but a methane venting system would be incorporated
into the piping system. Impacts would be the same for all three action alternatives.
No Action Altemative
Potential short-term, minor effects would include deer/vehicle collisions, hazardous material
spills, and employee health and safety effects during closure of the test mine facility. The
pipeline would not be constructed, and, therefore, no cultural surveys would be performed and
additional knowledge of the azea would not be gained. Socioeconomic benefits of employment,
earnings, tax revenues, and royalties would not be realized. The No Action Alternative would
also not meet the BLM's sodium management objective of facilitating the development of
sodium resources.
•

ES-9
