" -la-
G
VI. Hydrologic Balance: Ground Water - Rules 2.04.5, 2.04.7, 2.05.6(3),
and 4.05.
Information provided by the applicant with respect to ground eater is the
permit area can be found in Sections 4.2.2 through 4.2.5 in Volume I of the
application. Based on an analysis of these data the following determinations
have been made by the Division.
Drilling in the area indicates the presence of a saturated zone within the
Cameo seam (see Figure 4.2-3, Volume II). This saturated zone occurs outside
of the permit area and will not be encountered by projected mine workings
during this permit term.
The zone of saturation is the Cameo seam is rE:charged at the point were the
Cameo seam subcrops below the Salt Creek alltrvium approximately two miles
upstream of the mine. Very little recharge of the coal seams and sandstones
occur along outcrops due to the very low precipitation rate (8.8 inches)
and due to the steep slopes which favor runoff' over infiltration.
The applicant has no monitoring well completed in strata overlying or
within the zone of the underground mine vorkirigs. This is because of
the inaccessibility of the steep terrain to truck mounted drill rigs.
Previous holes drilled in the area of the portals have been dry to a depth
in excess of 200 feet below the Cameo seam and its associated roof and
floor strata are not saturated in the area of the
not a recharge area for these strate. mine. The mine zone is
The mine workings are situated within a geologic structure identif ied as
a graben. This graben is bounded on both sides by faults. Mining of the
coal is not possible beyond the faults because: of the displacement of the
coal seams. "'
One set of entries has encountered the fault on the south side of the graben.
At the time the fault was encountered, water (`loved into the mine. The
fault was eventually dewatered and all of the eater produced was contained
within the mine workings. The amount of eater experienced did not interfere
with the mining operation.
The fault will be encountered by the mine at a future time and will probably
produce water again. There is also a slight chance that the predicted
ground water zone of saturation will be encountered during this permit tem.
In order to monitor the effect of the operation on ground water resources
and to assist in the prediction of hydrologic impacts of future pewit terms,
the following stipulation is required:
4. THE PERMITTEE PNST SUBMIT TO THE DIVISION AN ANNUAL REPORT CHARACTERIZING
THE INFLOWS, DISCHARGES AND THE CO\SU`1PTION OF WATER WITHIN THE PANE.
THIS REPORT IS TO INCLUDE A PSINE [10RKIP7GS PfAP SHOWING THE LOC.~ITION
AND QUANTITY OF INFLOWS; A TABLE hiYED TO THE `SASE MAP WHICH SHALL
CONTAIN THE SOUP.CE (i.e. FAllLT, FR:ICTURES, ETC.), OUANTITY, DURATION, A;:D
QUALITY (i.e" pH, ELECTRO-COPHIUCTIVITY AIS- TE`tPERATURE) OF ALL NOP:-SEEP
INFLOWS; A TABLE CONTAINING RECORDS OF W„TER DISCHARGED FRO?I THE PfINE,
~^ ~ CONSU?lE- IN THE P1I?7E ANO L*1PORT.D FOR USE WITHi:1 THE PANE; .\ DISCUSSIO::
~-
OF TY.E WATER BALASCE WITHIN THE ifZ`:E; ~tiD, A PROJECTION OF HYDROLOGIC
I".'PACTS OF PSI:IINC IN THE UPCO?fI;:G fF1;R.
