Memo to Susan McCannon
Tatum Residence Second Inspection
page 2
window of the southern bedroom on the second floor. The continued invasion of
water appears to be buckling the plaster skin from the walls on both the interior
and exterior of the southeast corner of the structure. In several locations such as
the second story bedrooms and the eastern wall of the first story, the beams
supporting the second floor and the roof appear to be settling in the walls, as
though the adobe had softened sufficiently to flow around the beam, resulting in a
wrinkling of the interior and exterior plaster skin coat.
I observed an interesting feature in the small porch located in the southeast corner
on the first floor. A door at the bottom of the stairs to the second story exits from
the living room onto the 4 X 8 foot sandstone veneered concrete slab porch floor.
This small porch floor lies inside the structures outer two-story adobe walls.
Approximately 3 feet from the northern end of the east-facing wall adjoining the
patio, a linear "disturbed zone" exists on the adobe wall. The plaster has fallen off
the wall leaving an exposed zone of the underlying adobe up to an inch wide. The
adobe has eroded deeply enough to expose straw fibers within the original adobe.
There is no crack in the concrete slab floor beneath this "disturbed zone". The
adobe wall appears to be deteriorating solely because of the affects of water
which has invaded the adobe wall structure and percolated two stories to bottom
of the inner porch wall.
Following the examination tour, Dr. Kohli discussed the situation with Carl Gerity
for approximately an hour. During the approximately half of the discussion to
which I listened, Kewal stated his preliminary opinion concerning subsidence. Dr.
Kohli stated that he did not consider the stress being suffered by the Tatum's
house to be mining related.
cc: Mike Rosenthal, OSM
Randy Price
Joe Dudash
Mike Long, Director
Doc: M:\COAL\JAP\TATUM2.INS
JP/1P
