Long
FROM: Jim Pendleton -~^-'-~"~-" D.°~,~°°Dheci°r
RE: Second Exdininat' of Tatum Residence
At your request, Randy Price and I accompanied Kewal K. Kohli, PhD. and Mike
Rosenthal of the OSM to examine the Tatum residence near Weston, Colorado on
May 5, 1995. Dr. Kohli is a member of the staff of the OSM Pittsburgh Eastern
Support Center, with expertise in the prediction of subsidence ground movement.
Our examination consisted of a walk through with Carl Gerity, consultant to the
Tatums. Ralph Lopez and Larry Bennett, representatives of Basin Resources
accompanied the tour. Our walk through toured the main floor, the second floor
and concluded with the partial basement. We then examined the exterior of the
structure. Finally, we examined the adjoining pastures and the railroad right-of-
way.
I specifically refrained from participating aggressively in the discussion, in order to
allow Kewal to formulate his own independent opinion. Dr. Kohli had examined
the earlier OSM/Tatum correspondence, the Woodward-Clyde Allen mine report,
and an additional pillar strength report prepared by Michael Beniawski for the OSM.
Dr. Beniawski, a researcher noted for his research in mine working mechanics and
ground control, recently completed a research project in pillar stability funded by
the OSM. I dedicated the majority of my time to observing exterior deterioration of
the adobe walls.
The extensive rains of the past three weeks have exacerbated the condition of the
deterioration of the southern wall of the two story section of the structure. The
exterior plaster skin is buckling on the second story of the south-facing wall. The
buckling is severe enough that the plaster coat may be in danger of separating
from the adobe wall and falling to the ground. Small silt deltas were obvious in
several locations, such as on the window sill of the south-facing
