In either case, there will be a 0.5 foot thick structural fill on top of the underdrain rock.
Thus the contact configuration with the overlying geotextile and VLDPE liner will not
change.
The proposed configuration will facilitate construction because it will be easier and more
efficient to place bedding material in the lower trench in these narrower sections in a manner
that will cover the pipes than it would be to try to mound the bedding material on either side
of the pipes and sufficiently high to allow covering of the pipes in the upstream section of the
underdrain trench excavated to also contain the larger rock. It will be much easier for
equipment to operate in these narrower sections with this configuration. The same
constraints leading to the herein proposed modification do not impact the wider cross-
sectional areas to the same degree.
The flow capacities of the changed configuration have been re-computed by Golder
Associates and the information would, if I had the document with the re-computation, be
submitted as Attachment 2. However, as Dave Kidd explained, the calculations are still in
Golder's offices in Lakewood. Therefore Dave Kidd is to send a copy by facsimile
tomorrow morning (Wednesday). The re-computation that adjusts to the change in the
upstream segment of the underdrain demonstrates the same flow capacity exists as in the
original design. Therefore the capacity of the underdrain to pass quantities of water would
not change and, especially important, would not decrease.
If any questions arise, please do not hesitate to call. We would appreciate your concurrence
with our proposal at your earliest convenience because we should install underdrain pipe in
the next few days. If it is possible to verbally concur tomorrow upon receipt of the
calculations from Golder, it would allow us to maintain the construction schedule in that
regard. Thank you for your assistance.
Hardaway
Environmental Affairs
Attachments: 1. Cross section of underdrain configuration in area of equal to or less than
20-feet cross section.
2. Re-Computation of flow capacity of changed cross section (to be submitted
via facsimile message by Golder Associates on July 13, 1994).
FILE: CC&VSTIP.002
2
