' The sail to be replaced will be spread to an average depth of about six inches. However, there will be a range of topsoil depths. On south L~5 • slopes where mare moisture reserve is needed the depth will be about 8 (J-'"1 inches while on level areas on the pit bottom the depth will be around 5 '/^'~ inches. The depth of soil to be placed will primarily be dependent upon ~/ w the anticipated difficulty in revegetation. More difficult sites will be topsoiled to a greater depth while easy sites (level and north facing) will receive less sail. The reason for this is the fact that sandy soils have limited abilities to retain moisture and because moisture will undoubtedly be the primary limiting factor as much water retention capability must be instituted through soil depth. The surface of the soils will be left rough, particularly on the slopes. This is necessary because the seed will 6e broadcast and a rough surface creates a success rate in broadcasting similar to the mare • costly drill .seeding which could be used on level areas but would have limited feasibility on slopes. Topsoil will be spread on areas to be revegetated )ust prior to seeding (within two to three weeks). Although this may not allow a buildup of moisture, in these sails which are so permeable, such an aspect is not of great importance. It is far more important to have a surface condition suitable far reception of broadcast seed. Ideally, tapsoiling will occur between February and mid-March. However, in the case where tapsoiling must occur earlier or later than that date, then seeding would be delayed until the conditions are more appropriate. If tapsoiling occurs in the fall or winter (December or January) then seeding would occur the next spring. If it were done after April 1 then seeding would 6e delayed until the next year.
