SEP 14 '95 06~46PM BRLL PRCKRGING COC
• III III'IIIIII~lllll •
999
09/14/95 11:52 AM
To Cerl Mount /Divsion of Minerals and Geology,
This lettea is to state my complaint about the Phil Sheridan mine located on the Harry
Covey property in Sunshine Canyon, Boulder Colorado.
A few years ago I received notice from Hang Covey (my neighbor) of his intent to
operate a mine located on his property. I stated my objections to him about
noise:/traffic/dust/water/pollution problems and he said that he would only be operating
the mine part time with his brother and that it would be a very small operation and that
my concerns weren't warranted because this would be a very small operation.
P.2i4
With. that I celled the county about my concern with my water well. They came up and
performed a site survey, drew up a map and mailed it to me stating that my well location
would not be of concern to contamination end nuuung dry.
Since that time on one occasion last summer Mr. Covey did some blasting which sent
large rocks flying toward my home which landed about 75 feet away. ! jell the rocks
hitting my property from within my home!
Mr. Covey now is about age 80 and to old to work the mine. He has leased it to a
commercial Corporation East West Mining and they are based some where in Nevada.
They have been working this mine since spring of 95 and I have approached them with
my concerns with noise/trucks/dustetc.
So there is now a commercial company trying to wriggle out what they can on a very
very small parcel of land for some gold ore. I would have to question their right to do so
in a populated suburban mountain environment.
The problems that I now have are intensified 100 fold. Before, Mr. Covey would set off
one or two charges a couple of times a year. Which I might add, he was never even
certified or given a permit for in the first place and now he has given a Corporation
permission to mine and blast on his land without even contacting the residents of
Sunshine like he originally did. They are blasting weekly now. Every Sunday for a month
at 18:00 hours they have set off ten charges with the first charge rattling my house with
subsequent charges after that. Then last night (Wed) at 19:00 hours they set off six
charges and the first one almost blasted me and my house-mate right out of our chairs.
Who knows how many charges are being set to blest through the area when I am at work.
This company is also running a diesel generator spewing diesel fumes into my home for
many hours each day. My house is only about 300 feet from this mine and the winds are
bringing it in. This pollution is chocking and making me ill on these days. The current
lease from Mr Covey states that they have usage of the mine for a year, what will happen
if they strike some real ore there.
