- Point sitings will be located along a 25 meter transect stretched out either
northwest, northeast, southwest, or southeast of the sample location (the direction will
be randomly selected from the four possibilities). 25 meter transects are proposed
because of the constricted nature of the reclaimed area.
- The 50 points per transect (one point at each half meter interval) will comprise
a single sample unit. Cover will be identified by plant species, or as rock, litter, or
bare ground. For the purposes of estimating total vegetative cover, only first hit data
will be used.
SPECIES DIVERSITY:
- Because this is a Phase II study (versus Phase III), multiple hit data will not be
used in calculating relative vegetative cover. Instead, fast hit data will be used. In
reclaimed communities which are expected to have a simple structure such as this, the
correlation between relative cover based on multiple hit data and relative cover based
on first hit data can be expected to be extremely high (r>95%; see Bear No 1 & 2
Mines 1993 Phase III Report -Exhibit B, for an example). Therefore, first hit data,
which is less time consuming to collect, is considered sufficient for the purposes of this
study.
