TUM & RSFOCIRTES TEL -995-7191 Rpr 13.• 3=09'No.002 P,02
•~~12i 1995 2•. ~3 FROM -IOHEER EHOIHCEIl1HB 10 17130937!91 p, •2
•
Tp; ,~ ~~ ~ DATIS: Apri112,1996
8'R+OM: Carl Gerity ~~-
$UlfJECT: Progroea Report on Tatum BoMe Bubeidenoe issues

The purpose of this report is to update you on savors! items that relate to the
subsidence problems with your house at 6olitario ranch. This incladea a review of
the letters and memoranda by iaveatigatera that hs~e been sabaaitted since the
initial report flrom Pioneer Ea . in January 1886. A oorredion to that report
world include a revision of the age of the house 5rom 90 years to 60 years, this st111
represents a long time tp stand without damage.
As a result of the reference dted by Peadlewa~ ,I conducted a literature search to
locate all work thnt had been done by the U$ Geological Survey or the U8 Bureau of
Mines in the Weston Colorado area. 0 two studies were located, a report by
Woodward-Clyde Consultants for the AIlea Maw, and a report by the Colorado
School of Mines at the York Cant Mine in Baton, New Mexico.
CONCLUSIONS
The conclusions of the letter / memo by State of Colorado, Department of Natural
Resources, Division of Minerals and Qco .dated February 16,1996 and the
Office of 8utface Miniaa in a Memo dates ebruary 18,1986 and a letter dated
February 28,1896 are not neceesarily au the study by Woodward-
Clyde at the Allen mine, or the report by e a~ineere, Inc dated March 18,
1996.The latter concladea that shining related sabeidance could have caused the
problem.
• The Office of Surface Mining used as incorrect model in their computer
subeidenoe analysis. The correct model indicates that mine-influenced ground
movement could certainly have ageoted the Tatum house.
• MBHA maps are not regaired to ba accurate with respect to surface features,
ezcept railroadB sad highways. There ate several examples related to the Golden
F.ag a mine where they are not.
U. S. OFFICK OF aURFA~CE MINING
i
The letter dated February 28.198b from Charles E. Sandberge bas mis-
aharacterized the ragas manta of MBFiA is it's map rules. Mine maps are not
required to show sur tbaturee ezcept for railroads and highways, and aceording
to Bill Kemp of the Denver MBEA offiw aqq snrfhoe features are inddental and are
certainly limited in aocaracy to the acceptable range associated with the scale of the
rasp.
