The three remaining
items were: (1) seeding of cut and fill slopes, (2) type of
surface applied to the road, and (3) culvert spacing.
The first two are straight-forward. The Rockcastle Company has
seeded all cut and fill slopes (except the cut slope at Station
~0+00) with Seed Mix #2, the seed mixture for harsh sites.
Station 50+00 is the slide area about 2/3 the way up the road.
It has been seeded with Seed Mix #1, the seed mixture for stock-
piles and temporary stabilization. Seed Idix #1 was used to estab-
lish a quick root system to aid in stabilization. Seed i°lix #2
will be applied to this area in the fall of 1935.
The road surface on Pit 4 haul road consists of 12-13" of durable
rock taken from the bottom of Pit 4. A 6" layer of alluvial
gravel has not and will not be applied. Experience gained at the
other five nits proved that alluvial gravel would not stay on
surfaces other than flat grades. Bob Sherman to13 me they had
tried gravel at several of the other pit haul roads with inclines
about 60. 1-Ieavy traffic combined with continual maintenance
essentially rolled the gravel off the surface. Bob intentionally
avoided use of gravel (river rock) on Pit 4 haul road.
Pit 4 haul road was constructed in the manner described in the
permit. Since the road joined Pit 4 at a higher elevation than
planned, the exact alignment is somewhat different than planned,
