Ms. Margaret Koperski
June 22, 1978
Page 2
to remove material from time to time. We will do this.
Maximum height of the cut is approximately 16 feet and
length about 400 feet. Approximate area involved is 0.2
acres. Again in our opinion, long-range reclamation would
be better served by maintaining an open cut.
The rail loadout loop cut designated 80-1-004 lies on
the northwest section on both sides of the track bed just as
it enters the second curve. Slope is 1.5 to 1.0. Soil type
is Lewis shale mixed with some clay at the base of the cut.
The clay probably derives from the shale or has not yet
consolidated. The shale surface gradually disintegrates
on contact with the atmosphere. If necessary, spalled
material will be removed from time to time during normal
ditch maintainance. Maximum height of the cut is 40 feet,
total length about 2300 feet; slope about 2:1; total area
(both sides of the cut) about 4.4 acres. This type subsoil
base is difficult to reclaim and revegetate. We wish to
maintain this in its present open condition.
The topsoil in the loop area to be used for redistri-
bution is alkaline with pH ranging from 7.2 - 7.8. In
reality, this area is a salt flat largely taken over by
grease wood and salt grass where some moisture is available.
Dry Creek and Stokes Gulch which cross the area already show
salt deposits creeping up the stream banks.
The topsoil from the area has been stored in piles and
will be revegetated with a mixture of yellow sweet clover -
0.7#/A; streambank (Sodar) wheatgrass 2.2#/A Western Wheat-
grass - 3.2#/A; Crested wheatgrass (NOrdan) - 4#/A seeds
which are salt tolerant.
This mixture will also be used for the other disturbed
areas.
All of the ridges along the top of each cut will be
provided with a drainage ditch to prevent erosion by preci-
pitation coming down the face of the cuts. The ditches in
the rail loadout will be directed to a sediment pond. The
sediment pond has been designed to prevent discharge except
for 25 year, 24 hour flood.
