.. ~.
January 7, 1987
Page 2

Figures 3A and 3B - These figures show the second step in
Stage 2 where the remaining clay to be mined is removed and
the mined area backfilled to its final contour.
Mining of the second step of Stage 2 will not commence until min-
ing in Stage 3 is complete. Mining in Stage 3 and the second
step of Stage 2 will progress to the north and south respectively
in the same manner as stated in the current permit.
The mining plan submitted with this TR shows 5 stages; a reduc-
tion from the 11 stages shown in the current mining plan. This
was done for simplification. Because reclamation will be concur-
rent with mining, the total area being disturbed at any one time
(after Step 1 of Stage 2 is completed) will vary only a small
amount. The current pit will progress from Stage 1 to the north
into Stage 3 to the permit boundary. As new areas are disturbed,
a like area will be reclaimed in the mined out area. When mining
is completed in Stage 3, overburden from Step 2 of Stage 2 and/or
from the overburden stockpile will be used to complete the final
backfill of Stage 3. The same process would occur as mining pro-
gresses to the south into Step 2 of Stage 2. Due to the addition
of Step 1 of Stage 2 and because of the many variables (brick
markets, clay characteristics, clay seam thicknesses, etc.), a
set timetable would be very difficult to maintain. Mining of
this mine should take 20 to 30 years. The location and advance
of the pit and mined areas can easily be shown every year in the
annual report.
Based on the following table, the maximum disturbance at any one
time will not exceed 23.3 acres.
Stage 1 18.8 acres
Stage 2, Step 2 3.5 acres
Stage 3 1.0 acres
Total 23.3 acres
Stages 4 and 5 will only be disturbed if additional overburden or
soil is needed for the reclamation of the mining areas.
The Robinson Brick Company and the Soil Conservation Service have
been working together on the reclamation for this site for sev-
eral years. Based on SCS recommendations, test plots and
experience, a revision to the current reclamation plan is also
requested.
The main difference to the reclamation plan is that the terraced
slopes would be reduced to gradual 3H:1V slope. This will leave
a cliff face ranging from less than 10 feet to BO feet in height.
The average height would be less than 45 feet. At least two
locations, where the cliff height is greater than 60 feet, would
