Box 5538
Arvada, Colorado 80005-0538
RE: Buffalo Mine Permit Application M-78-11 -Elbert county, Colorado
Dear Mr. Janes,
Based on review of the Robinson Brick Company Buffalo Mine Permit application,
field review of District Wildlife Manager, Tom Seamans, and on our conversation
2 am supplying the following reclamation continents on behalf of the Colorado
Division of Wildlife.
The proposed mining project will not have significant impacts on wildlife
species of "special interest" e. g. threatened or endangered, or of high interest
economically or recreationally. However, much of the 412 acres to be mined will
cease to be wildlife habitat in part or in whole for numerous wildlife species
until reclamation is successfully achieved. Accordingly, the Division recommends
the following.
1. Reclamation be done concurrent to mining such that no more than 10
acres are in an unreclaimed state at any time.
' 2. That available soils be saved and stabilized and that grading for
reseeding be done at 4:1 slopes.
. 3. That drainages and existing vegetation in and along drainages be left
undisturbed.
4. That native grasses, shrubs and forbs be used for revegetation rather
than introduced species. The introduced species are not drought
resistant or as hardy, and tend to die out after one to two growing
seasons. Accordingly, those species listed in #3 of physical characteris-
tics of the Soil Conservation Report August 1984 for this site should
be used.
' S. Revegetation efforts must prove successful through two growing seasons
or reseeding must be redone until such longevity is realized.
6. Cattle must be kept off revegetated areas for a minimum of two years
following reseeding.
DEPA gTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES. Hamlet J.
