-' "~' 2
In 1978, our predecessor, the Soil Conservation Service, frequently recommended the inclusion
ofcresfed wheatgrass in reclamation grass mixtures. Through field research conducted in the
imervening years, it has been determined that native grass mixes without crested wheatgrass
provide much better field results. The following native grass, wildflower and shrub seed mix
and application rates are recommended for re-vegetation in soil types found in the mine area; and
are based on MRCS "critical area" seeding rates that are double our normal rates.
Table A
We recommend mulching re-vegetated areas with clean weed-free straw or native hay. It should
be applied at a rate of4,DD0 pounds per acre and crimped into the soil to anchor iY. Crimpiag
should be cross slope or on the contour, if possible. The State of Colorado has a list of certified
weed-free straw available on the Internet or it caa be obtained through local county extension
service offices. All surface water should be diverted away from the ro-vegetated slopes to a
point where it can safely flow down slopes without the potential of serious soil erosion.
Weeds in the re-vegetated aeeas will need to be controlled by mowing or herbicide application
urtil grasses are established, usually the first four yeazs after planting for native species. If
needed, the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension can be contacted for herbicide
recommendations and best time for weed control.
Surface and Subsurface Water
The West Adams Conservation District, along with others in the area, is concerned about the
overall loss ofwater resources, both surface and subsurface, due to projects such as this. A
number of questions should be addressed and resolved for this project.
