COLER ~
COL/ANTONIO
ENGINEERS ANO SGENTSTS
February 24, 2005
Banks and Gesso, LLC
Ms. Maureen Jacoby
720 Kipling, Suite 117
Lakewood, CO 80215
RE: Wetlands Review for King Mountain Sand and Gravel Mine
Dear Ms. Jacoby:
As requested, a wetland specialist from Coler and Colantonio, Inc. reviewed available maps and
pertinent information for the proposed King Mountain Sand and Gravel Mine located in Section
14, Township 1 North, Range 85 West in Routt County, CO. The purpose of our review was to
provide an assessment of the likelihood that jurisdictional wetlands will be present within the
intended mining limits as shown on Figure 1 (see attached).
Methods
Coler and Colantonio, Inc. reviewed aerial photos of the project site, site photos taken in October
of 2004, preliminary soil data from the Routt County Conservation District, the USGS
topographical map (Trapper Quadrangle) and the National Wetland Inventory (NWI) Map
(Trapper Quadrangle) to determine the likelihood of wetlands within the intended work limits.
Due to the time of year, it was not feasible to perform a field site review.
Results
The aerial photo and USGS map of the site depicts relatively flat topography within the intended
mining limits with a lack of trees or tall shrubs. Site photographs indicate the site is vegetated
predominantly with sagebrush (Artemisia spp) and a variety of grasses. Shrubs and small areas of
trees are located along two intermittent drainages along the eastern side of the property. The
northern of the two drainage appears to contain a stock pond. These drainages may contain
wetlands or other waters of the U.S. but are outside of the mining limits.
The NWI map indicates a wetland in the southern intermittent drainage. This wetland is mapped
as PSSB (Palustrine Sctub-Shrub, Saturated). The stock pond in the northern drainage is mapped
as PABFh (Palustrine Aquatic Bed, Semipermanently flooded, diked/irnpounded). These two
mapped areas are outside of the intended mining limits.
The information from the Routt County Conservation District indicates two main soil types
within the intended mining limits: I) Fourmile-Tellura complex, 1 to 8 percent slopes, very stony;
2) Binco-Gourley complex, 3 to 25 percent slopes, very stony. Both of these soils are classified
as well-drained and occur on mesa and plateau tops, and rolling hills.
Discussion and Conclusion
The project site is located on top of a plateau above the confluence of Smith and Egeria Creek.
The site is approximately 150 to 200 feet higher in elevation than the creeks and is dominated by
2801 Youngfield Street, Suite 300 Tel: 303.275.3477
Golden, CO 80401 Fax: 303.275.6241
