o Throughout the construction efforts of 1980-1982, flat lying ground for
~~ construction laydown and staging was at a premium. A potential project
designed to reduce this problem in future development efforts is that of
clearing and leveling the semi-works area at the base of the mine bench
face. This project requires the dismantling of the semi-works retort
and ancillary facilities, to be followed by some regrading activity.
Specifications for this work are currently in preparation, and a
decision whether or when to proceed will be made after cost estimates
are developed.
o The second phase of the plantsite grading represents another major
earthwork project in the development plan. The plan described in the
• original MLRD Permit Application calls for approximately 120 acres of
essentially flat plantsite. To accomplish this, making use of only the
material which can be produced at the plantsite would require that
approximately 600,000 cubic yards of rock be drilled, blasted, hauled
and compacted, resulting in a balanced cut and fill within the plant-
site. Prior to developing specifications for this project, an
engineering study will be undertaken to develop the most economical
mass balance of earthwork remaining on the project which will indicate
rhether such a balance within the plantsite is optimum compared to other
possible approaches. This analysis will also incorporate any revisions
in plantsite layout and grading requirements which may result from on-
going research in materials handling and retort design.
• D-6
