4
proceed urrhec]ced, areas may be rp*rlprori unusable airs may require many Years and
enormous monetary outlays for rehabilitation.
Undistur.~~ed Soil Classification
A soil survey was o~ipleted in Jackson Canty in 1973. TWo soil types were
mapped on and arotud the Baag Mine permit area, the ayorthent family an the
steeper slopes aryl the Fluetsch series aa~ shallower slopes, specifically the
Fluetsctr~Piagos association (USDA-S6, ]973 j . The following desai.ptions are
frcmm the Soil Omiservation Service.
Cryorthents includes a variety of shallow soils that differ in depth, color
texture, reaction, and mi noral ogy, They ate on steep terrace breaks and uplarrl
ridges between elevations of 7,980 and 9,200 feet. Slopes are 15 to 70 percerst.
The native vegetation is mainly bl»P*~~+ wheatgrass, needle-ard-thread, Indian
rioegrass, wi.rrterfat, law rabbitbrush, and fringed sage.
These soils ate generally less than 20 inches deep over soft shale or

f

sandstone and have little or no horizon development. In some of the areas mapped
as Cryorthents (steep), the soils ate deep and cobble-filled or have various
depths of cobbly material over shale. In some areas on tenaoes, side slopes,
aryl breaks, the wobbly wpsi~urden is deeper at the upper part of the slope.
Available water capacity is generally low. The_Se soils are on unfavorable
exposure, and much of the moisture is removed by strung winds. F3noff is rapid.
The hazards of soil blowing ar,d water erosion are severe.
The Fluetsch series ooa~sists of deep, well drained soils that formed in
calcareats alluvium Prtm sandstone atd sandy shale. They are on old alluvial
fans, old hick terxaoes, arrl valley sides between elevations of 8,000 and 9,000
feet. Slopes are 2 to 15 pervert. The native vegetation is mainly pine
needlegrass, J~irmra~a, muttcuigra_ts, streaIDbarilc Wheatgrass, bluebunch wheatgrass,
