In addition to the disposal of the CKD in the mined pits, Fremont Sanitation District has b~e~en~nnttted~~ 1~
to dispose of its sewag~, from the neazby treatment plant, in the CKD disposal areas. This sludge
is delivered to the site in a tank truck and then sprayed over the CICD. The water from the sludge
combines with the CICD to form a hardened crust on top of the CKD piles. This serves as daily cover for
the CKD and is an effective dust control measure. In addition, the pH of the CKD effectively kills any
remaining bacteria or pathogens in the treated sludge. Across-section depicting the configuration of a
typical CKD disposal area and the relationship of the CKD disposal areas, in Cuts 6 and 8, to groundwater
is included as Figure 5 in the attached Hydrogeologic Assessment. The location of the cross-section is
indicated on Figure 4 of the attached report.
3. Closure Plan for the CKD Disposal Areas.
Closure of the CKD disposal areas is accomplished by covering the CKD with approximately five (5) feet
of broken shale. The shale is placed with dump trucks and then graded using afront-end loader and road
grader. Truck and heavy equipment traffic provides additional compacti a. In addition,
~~~I~ 17 r~ 1 R ;orhrc nftoocoil is spread over the shale can fThe surface is graded nearly flat with ~
sufficient slope to prevent ponding of rainfall on top of the CKD disposal area.
