• ~ vas veathering badly, embossed metal tags were wired to the leads to .
insure accurate labeling. Metal tags were applied during October 1978.
_ Ia analyzing the sail moisture and temperature data it became
apparent that same errors had occurred in reading the block labels during
the 1978 measurements. These errors are discussed in the Results section.
2.7 Data Collection
2.7.1 Soil Temperature Aad Moisture Measurements
Field measurements vere taken with a Soil Test MC-300B Soil Moisture-
Temperature Meter at tvo veek intervals beginning on May 3 sad concluding
oa October 28, 1978. The data sheet used to record data is shown in Figure
2.7-1. Readings vere takes betveen 1500 and 1600 on measurement days.
2.7.2 Soil Physical Aad Chemical Characteristics
•f Three samples of soil used for topsoiliag the plots were collected at
randomly selected points an the plots subsequent to soil placement. Samples
vere submitted to Front Range Environmental Laboratory for analysis of
organic matter content, NOg-N, N$,-N, P, and R, and particle size.

2.7.3 Vegetation Cover and Density Measurements
Plot canopy cover and density estimates vere performed on May 25, 1978,
and cover data were collected again on October 9, 1978. Density data were
not collected in October because dormant plants could not be distinguished
from dead plants.
A .2 x .5 m (.1 m2) rectangular sampling quadrat vas used to sample
corer and density in all treatments. Five randomly located quadrats were
sampled in each treatment. Bandomization vas achieved on 4:1 plots by
dividing the plots into a grid consisting of 9 equally spaced units on
the vertical and horizontal axes.
