•~ It vas found that root systems on these species were shallow (6 to 12")
and spread laterally. The inability to obtain a large surface area with a
backhoe bucket limits the utilitq of this tool to transplant large, clonal
shrubs.
No fertilizer vas added to plantings is resoiled plots because of the
relatively high natural fertility of the soil covering. No fertilizer
vas applied to exposed refuse plots so that they could be statistically
compared vith the recoiled plots.
2.6 Soil Temperature And Moisture Instrumentation
Combination soil temperature, soil moisture cells were purchased
from Soil Test (Soil Test MC-310A) for use in this study.
The moisture-temperature blocks vere distributed over the plots as
"~ follow:
J
North sad south slopes: 2 slope angles (x) 3 mulches (includes control)
(x) 2 slope aspects (x) 4 depths ~ 48
ToP: 2 soil types (soil and refus_) (x) 4 depths ~ 8
East cad: 4 depths ~ 4
West end: 2 mulches (x) 4 depths ~ 8
68
Locations of blocks on the plots are shown is Figure 2.1-1. Blocks vere
inserted at depths of 5, 15, 25, and 50 cm perpendicular to the base of
` the plot. A soil auger vas used to excavate a cylindrical hole for ia-
stalling blocks. Blocks vere pressed into the sides of the hole at the
- required depths. Soil vas added to the hole in iacremeats and tamped
to approximate the bulk density of the surrounding undisturbed soil. Blocks
vere buried aC the same distance from the top of each plot. Block leads
vere initially labeled with tape. When it become evident that the tape
10
