The inability to obtain a large surface area with a <br />backhoe bucket limits the utilitq of this tool to transplant large, clonal <br />shrubs. <br />No fertilizer vas added to plantings is resoiled plots because of the <br />relatively high natural fertility of the soil covering. Blocks vere <br />inserted at depths of 5, 15, 25, and 50 cm perpendicular to the base of <br />` the plot. A soil auger vas used to excavate a cylindrical hole for ia- <br />stalling blocks. Blocks vere pressed into the sides of the hole at the <br />- required depths. Soil vas added to the hole in iacremeats and tamped <br />to approximate the bulk density of the surrounding undisturbed soil. Blocks <br />vere buried aC the same distance from the top of each plot.
