RECLAMATION PLAN (changed) <br />Planting of this site follows a typical pattern for asemi-arid environment. Seeding will only <br />occur between late August and early October OR between January and late March. Seeding <br />during these times will provide for the greatest success. Spring seeding tends to produce the <br />maximum number of seedlings while autumn and winter seeding produces fewer seedlings but <br />similar cover and density as that achieved by spring seeding followed by early summer die-back as <br />a result of excessive competition. The ultimate vegetation produced by both methods is usually <br />similar, although compositional variations may occur depending on moisture patterns during the <br />first growing season. <br />Due to the fact that the soils will probably be fairly rocky, broadcast seeding will probably <br />be required. Drill seeding might be done, but would be hard on equipment. <br />The mixtures designed for this operation do not require fertilization or mulching to succeed. <br />No irrigation is necessary, if precipitation is at least 60% to 75% of normal. <br />Generally, no trees will be planted on this site. The invasion rate of trees into this site, as <br />evidenced by invasion into past disturbances, is very high. This pattern is also evident for many of <br />the native shrubs. Growth rates of woody vegetation, once established, is also high. However, on <br />the erosion control terraces that will cross the quarry floor it is important to plant trees. It is likely <br />that shrubs will invade quickly. These are needed to strengthen these terraces until trees and shrubs <br />can invade elsewhere and provide additional binding of the soil in non-terraced areas. <br />The following seed mixture is based on broadcast rates of approximately 80 live seeds per <br />square foot. Seeding should occur within 7 to 10 days of topsoil distribution, provided topsoil <br />distribution occurs during the planting season. In the event the topsoil is spread during a time when <br />seeding cannot occur, the topsoil surface will be extensively loosened prior to seeding, especially if <br />there are signs that the soil has become somewhat compacted by settling or shows evidence of a <br />hard surface due to clay particle sealing. In the event the seed is <br />drilled the seeding rate per acre should be cut in half. Drill seeding is not likely to occur as the soil <br />to be replaced will very likely be too rocky to effectively drill without experiencing equipment <br />damage. <br />No mulch, fertilizer, or irrigation is necessary with this mixture as the mixture primarily <br />uses native species characteristic of the natural vegetation.
