The flat areas that can be
planted by machine will be planted that way. Small marginal areas and sloped areas, must be
done by broadcasting. I see no problem with seed rate doubling Cor broadcast areas. Small
portion of total area.
Deeper mining around scales will not be done. The area around scales and South of
East to West boundary that aligns with the South boundary of adjoining pit, is small and has
been used as temporary parking for trucks and equipment for distant customers. This is also
the cutoff point for Inqun•es and lost souls driving to the end of the road dur(ng working hours.
There well be no topsofl or seed placed on floor here. Only newly sloped areas around already
relocated power poles. The culvert that crosses the haul road, immediately North of scales, is
the beginning of pit floor that would be considered Cor lowering. The final grade must allow
water to flow in a North Westerly direction from this point. A final grade will be calculated
when enough evidence is uncovered In area number one. A uniform grade is desired, but may
not be possible. In that case, the next best option will be used.
Stormwater berms: These would be seeded, but at this stage I cannot determine fl' top
soli would remain in a narrow strip this close to the edge. I remind myself that this is a desert,
without water Uom the dams built here, will there be water available after adjoining pit is mined
out to irrigate a ridge above level of pit floor. A ridge will not retain moisture as well as the flat.
The berms are located the entire length of east boundary with the exception of the gullies. The
areas that are steeper than 3:1 on the east, are mostly outside permit boundary. 'they are part
of the slides that have occurred when Irrigation began on the mesa. This project was, an still is,
under the Bureau of Reclamation. The slide material has been there many years with lltUe or
no movement. The seepage on the slopes, caused from the irrigation above, has provided water
for the vegetative growth seen there and presently used as pasture land. These areas will not
support the weight of machines because of seepage.
The statement made"destruction of machines is not cost effective", refers to areas that
could be Carmed In this area, but were not allocated water, under the project, and are extremely
rocky.
