~ ~ III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
TR9PPER 1RINING INC. 999
June 9, 1987
CERTIFIED P577401527
Mr. Gregg Squire
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
423 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Gregg:
~~~~~~~®
JUN 10198T
MINED LAND
RECLAMATION DIVISION
RE: Trapper Mines proposed historic production standards, Division's response
Following are Trapper Mine's responses to the Division's comments on our pro-
posed historic production standards for postmine grazing lands and wildlife
habitat.
Division Comment:
1. Trapper has presented six years of production data in the proposal. As a
matter of policy, the Division requires seven years of data in order to
ensure that natural precipitation cycles (low to high) have been expressed
in the data. As Trapper has noted, the data for years 1982, 1983 and 1984
indicate above-average precipitation. This would appear to skew the
standard toward higher values. The Division can accept the standard based
on the six years of data, though Trapper may wish to submit 1986 data to
present additional data from a year with a more normal precipitation
record.
Response⢠
Enclosed Table 1 provides seven years of production data for premine range
sites A, B, and C. The 1979 data, as collected, includes both herbaceous pro-
duction and shrub production. Therefore, in order to calculate herbaceous
production, the total 1979 production was multiplied by the percent herbaceous
component given in the appropriate Soil Conservation Service (SCS) range site
description. Percent herbaceous production was obtained from SCS range site
descriptions for Brushy Loam (Trapper Mine range sites A and B) and Clayey
Foothills (Trapper Mine range site C). These SCS range sites are close
approximations to the Trapper Mine range sites based on species composition.
Trapper cannot provide 1986 data since no premine sampling was done in 1986.
Division Comment:
2) In order to verify [he range of precipitation cycles, Trapper should
submit precipitation records from 1979 through 1985 for a station at or
near the mine.
cont.
P.0.
