Portions of the proposed mining
expansion along Wilson Creek in sections 33, 28 and 22 (Map 16A) have not been surveyed
for cultural resources; prior to activities associated with mining development, an inventory
for cultural resources should be conducted in these areas and the results provided to our
office for review and comment.
Within the South Taylor/Lower Wilson mining areas, past cultural resources inventories
have identified two sites that are eligible for the NRHP (SMF1935, a prehistoric camp;
SMF1937, which has prehistoric and historic components) and four sites for which NRHP
eligibility is unevaluated (SMF1652, a prehistoric camp; SMF4003, which has prehistoric
and historic components; SMF4010 and SMF4011, both of which aze prehistoric sites). If
the area containing these sites is scheduled for ground-disturbing activities associated with
mining development, the NHRP eligibility should be determined in consultation with our
office for those sites which are unevaluated. In addition, the location of a bison bone
identified in a cutbank along Wilson Creek in Section 28 should be examined by a
professional archaeologist to determine whether it represents human activity or is a natural
occurrence. If this is a locus of human activity the NRHP eligibility of the site should be
determined in consultation with our office.
Re; Expansion of existing mining at Colowyo Coal Mine (Permit No. C-1981-019)
Permit Revision Application No. 2 (PR-02)
