Crested ~vheatgrass is
' the dominant perennial grass (78.52 percent). Field alyssum and Jim Hill mustard constitute the
greatest relative cover values among amtual forbs at 5.19 and 3.70 percent, respectively.
t Analysis of relative production values derived from the 2001 sample event reveal a distribution
of abundance by life-form similar to relative cover values. Perennial grasses dominate the area
with a relative production value of 94.37 percent, followed by annual forbs at 4.90 percent.
' Alfalfa represents 0.54 percent of the relative production on the Pasture Reference Area.
' The relative cover and production values for alfalfa not only describe the present condition of the
area, they provide insight as to the probable future condition of [he Pasture Reference Area.
Currently, thousands of tiny alfalfa plants are sprouting across the entire expanse of the area.
' This explains why alfalfa exhibits 5.94 percent relative cover but only 0.54 percent relative
production. The "patchy" distribution of alfalfa, combined with the small size of individuals,
gives the appearance that alfalfa seed was broadcast by hand on the Pasture Reference Area
within the last year. Alfalfa will increase across the area, both in cover and production, over the
foreseeable future. It is [he opinion of the vegetation ecologist who conducted the sample that
alfalfa will dominate this area within a few years, and that overall cover and production will
' 100/ Bnseline Vegem(ion Smdy -Empire Mine/995/October /8, 1001 A-7
