Wetland The following seed mix is for the wetland areas. This seed mix
should be hand-raked into the soil and covered with mulch,
avoiding the compaction of mechanical equipment. The mulch
will be crimped in at a rate of 1.5 tons/acre. Only certified weed
free mulch will be used. Tubelings or cuttings will also be planted
along all lake edges. Cottonwoods, willow, sumac and
buffaloberry will be planted in clumps of 10 to 15 trees with the
trees spaced about 8-10 feet apart. The clumps will be about 100
to 200 feet apart. Approximate clumps can be seen in the
Reclamation Maps
Species Lbs/acre Seed, PLS
Nebraska Sedge 1.0
Hardstem Bulrush 4.0
Beaked Sedge 1.0
Alkali Bulrush 2.0
Canada Wildrye 2.5
Slender Wheatgrass 2.5
Total 13.0
Post-Reclamation Use
Most of the future site's use will be recreation and wildlife habitat. The lakes will be used
primarily for wildlife habitat with some fishing and boating recreational use. Through work
with the CDOW, two types of fisheries have been planned. Warm water fisheries are being
planned for the Chambers Pit and Mining Area Z of the Scott Expansion. In order to be used as
a warm water fishery a lake must be isolated from flood events less than a 50-year event and be
over 15 acres in surface area. The original Chambers Pit, 20.17 acres, is above the 100-Flood
Plain placing it outside the reach of 50-year events. Therefore, no additional water control
structures such as berms are planned. Mining Area 2 of the Scott Expansion, 16.66 acres, is
within the reach of a 50-year flood event, therefore berms must be installed. The exact nature
and design of these plans will be based on CDOW recommendations. It is expected that the
berms will be designed similar to the Lafarge Mamm Creek Operation directly to the east. The
berm extent is expected to wrap around the narrow northern section of Mining Area 2 of the
Scott Expansion. As recommended by the CDOW, the remainder of the lakes in the Expansion
area will be stocked only with Rainbow Trout. These lakes would require large berms to
isolate them from 50-year events. These berms would cause a significant narrowing of the
river flood plain in this area. This narrowing would create a high velocity flow channel in this
reach of the river. The large increase in velocity would greatly increase the effect of erosion
and increase the likelihood of river capture of the numerous ponds including the City of Rifle's
water intake. To improve further fish habitat, stumps and roots will be placed in piles at the
8/25/04 Page ~3
