EXHIBIT D i/
Mining Plan
The original application, and this amendment, both propose surface mining of sand and gavel,
quamed granite aggregate and quarried sandstone at a site located 10 miles west of Canon City,
Colorado, in an area just upstream of the confluence of the Arkansas River and Tallahassee
Creek. The project azea is adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) which runs along the
north side of the river channel. A 54.8-acre (112-acre proposed for amendment) gravel
extraction area is located between the river and Tallahassee Creek. A 72.5-acre granite quarry
and 3-acre sandstone quarry are located on the opposite side (north) of the creek. The principal
intended use is construction aggregate for both the granite and gravel and landscape materials for
the sandstone. The maximum current mining production limit remains unchanged at 2.8 million
tons (total) per year. '-- --
The original permit proposed mining 54.8 acres for sand and gravel down to the watertable, a
depth of approximately 40 feet. The original perrnit mining maps show this 54 acres of mining
laid out such that 7.3 acres is mined out east of the plant area in one phase, and the remainder is
mined out west of the plant in three phases. I This amendment proposes a new mining limit that
extends the previous mining limit to the west to include an additional 12 acres, and a new mining
depth down to bedrock (approximately 60 feet) across the entire sand and gravel pit. The
proposed western boundary was extended after exploratory drill logs discovered approximately
50 feet ofcommercially-saleable sand and gravel.
The existing permit contains a 64.3-acre granite quarry and proposed a mining depth of elevation
5780 feet and a reclamation plan incorporating wildlife habitat and open space. This amendment
proposes a new disturbance limit of approximately 83 acres and a new limit of mining to contain
approximately 72.5 acres. This permit amendment will allow Front Range Aggregates to mine to
a bottom elevation of 5300 feet above sea level.
Exhibit C-1, Current Conditions Map, is included to identify the permit boundaries, existing
roads, utilities, and structures. The proposed project layout is shown on the Mining Plan Map
(Exhibit C-2) which shows the permit and affected land boundaries, proposed mining and
process areas, proposed roads, railways, ditches, and sediment control structures.
CURRENT CONDITIONS
Sand and Gravel Mining
The sand and gravel mining has extended to a majority of the authorized mining limit;
approximately 400 feet within the mining limit along the approved western boundazy remains
undisturbed. The currently mined depth is to within 5 feet of the watertable. The processing
plant has been established in the eastern portion of the gravel pit, with conveyor belts extending
westward. This processing plant currently facilitates wet and dry screening. Sediment ponds
have been established along the northern portion of the mined azea. A cyclone system is
currently installed to remove up to 80% of the reject fines. Dust control is currently being
controlled by a NESCO (National Environmental Service Company) Dust Suppression System.
Front Range Aggregates, LLC- P¢dulale Quarry
DMG lJ2 Permit Amendment
Page /0
